Beat the Streets Detroit

Girls Wrestling Program

There are few if any sports as equal opportunity as wrestling and as part of our commitment to growing wrestling within the City of Detroit, we are also committed to supporting the girls and young women in our program (representing roughly a third of our participants).  It is a little known fact that girls wrestling is arguably the fastest growing girls high school sport having grown nearly 10% or more for the past 27 years!

Girls’ Wrestling Clinic

We believe that representation matters, and it is important for girls to see possibilities at the next level and beyond.  At our Patton Park location, girls have constituted nearly half of our wrestlers for the past several years so that location seemed the most logical site for us to host our first-ever Girls Clinic in 2017.  The clinic is now an annual event, and welcomes everyone.

Past Clinicians

Renowned wrestler and coach Jacque Davis, the Girls Development Director of Beat the Streets NYC, was a featured clinician in 2017 and 2018. Jacque began wrestling at the age of twelve and then continued her career at Menlo College. Jacque is instrumental in the movement for girls and women’s wrestling. In addition to her work with BTS, she began a women’s wrestling club at Columbia University, created the Gotham City Girls Open Championship, and assisted in the creation of a girls’ wrestling camp at Cornell.

In 2018 and 2019, the Adrian College Women’s Wrestling team were special guests, and taught their favorite wrestling techniques. The team brought 6 wrestlers and their head coach, Cliff Cushard.
