Coach Lauren Birks

Coach Lauren Birks is originally from Dallas, Texas, where she joined the wrestling team her freshman year. She placed at Freestyle Wrestling Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota all four years of high school and was a three-year national placer for the United States Girls Wrestling Association Folkstyle Nationals, held in Livonia, Michigan. Lauren attended The University of Texas at Austin, in which she obtained a bachelor’s degree in psychology and teacher certification in middle grades math. From 2014-2016 Lauren served as a Peace Corps Youth Development Volunteer in Costa Rica. She moved to Michigan to attend the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and completed her master’s in social work in 2017. Throughout college Lauren would help out with her high school’s wrestling team and has always wanted to get back involved in the sport. Now, Coach Birks is a school social worker at Hamtramck High School and serves as the head high school wrestling coach there as well as leading the Beat the Streets Detroit community-based program in Hamtramck. Lauren believes that wrestling teaches valuable, transferable skills from the mat to real life – perseverance, determination, focus, leadership, and flexibility, just to name a few. Coach Birks is looking forward to being part of the BTSD community, as she wants to be able to share her passion for wrestling with more youth and to show more girls that they can, and should, wrestle too!
