Science Festival Press Release

May 2, 2018 – At Beat the Streets Detroit, there is no rest day from learning. On Sunday, April 15th, our Patton Park wrestlers made their way from Southwest Detroit to Belle Isle for Michigan State University’s annual Science Festival.  Since 2013, Michigan State University (MSU) has hosted its multiday Science Festival across the state for life-long learners of all ages. According to its website, its goal is to be a festival “celebrating science and related disciplines of technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics, all through a variety of presentation topics and formats.”

MSU’s Science Festival now consists of over 100 presentations statewide. Thanks to the support and generosity of MSU Detroit Center, Jena Baker-Calloway (Director of MSU Detroit Center), and her team, twenty-three members of the Beat the Streets Detroit family were able to board a bus from Patton Park direct to Belle Isle.

It was clear that from beginning to end the Science Festival was a hit with our wrestlers and coaches. “Despite the gloomy weather, we had a blast. I treasure every moment that we can empower our students and enrich their lives. It’s even better that we get to use wrestling as that vehicle to cultivate a life-long love of learning,” said coach and board member Fermin Miguel Mendez. Some of our favorite exhibits are listed below.
